Nepal Border Crossings from India

A practical map of the main India–Nepal gateways and which Nepal destinations each one naturally serves.

PRACTICAL GUIDE

Nepal Border Crossings from India

Choosing the border is part of itinerary design. Sunauli–Bhairahawa is particularly useful for Lumbini and routes toward Pokhara/central Nepal. Bihar-origin travellers may find eastern or central gateways more logical for Janakpur and Kathmandu. The goal of this guide is to match the gateway to the destination sequence rather than defaulting every traveller to one crossing.

Sunauli / BhairahawaStrong for Lumbini and western-central Nepal

Sunauli–Bhairahawa

The best-known gateway for Gorakhpur-origin travel and a natural entry for Lumbini, with onward road possibilities toward Chitwan and Pokhara.

Bihar-origin gateways

Travellers from Patna and surrounding regions should not automatically detour through Gorakhpur. Janakpur and Kathmandu can have different logical crossings.

Border day planning

Keep time for queues, vehicle/customs formalities where applicable and road variability after entry. Do not stack a long border day with unrealistic full sightseeing.
